Higher prevalence but later age at onset of asthma in cross-country skiers compared with general population

Astman esiintyvyys 351 kilpahiihtäjällä verrattuna 338 väestöverrokkiin. Astma oli yleisempää hiihtäjillä (25,9 % vs. 9,2 %, p < 0,001), mutta alkoi myöhemmin (mediaani 13,0 vs. 8,0 vuotta). 89 % astmaa sairastavista hiihtäjistä oli hyvässä hoitotasapainossa. 82,4 % käytti säännöllisesti inhaloitavia kortikosteroideja.
Abstract (EN)
Asthma prevalence in 351 competitive cross-country skiers compared with 338 population controls. Asthma was more prevalent in skiers (25.9% vs. 9.2%, p < 0.001) but had a later onset (median 13.0 vs. 8.0 years). 89% of skiers with asthma had well-controlled disease. 82.4% used inhaled corticosteroids regularly.
