A new research project investigates cough prevalence and impact in endurance athletes using the CE-certified SIVA MVP 1.0 cough monitor.
Rikhard Mäki-Heikkilä's doctoral dissertation 'Asthma and Respiratory Symptoms in Finnish Competitive Cross-Country Skiers' was accepted at Tampere University on 16 February 2024.
The research project continues with a follow-up study. Cross-country skiers and controls are invited back to complete the survey to understand how asthma and respiratory symptoms develop over time.
Our research group's first peer-reviewed article has been published in Sports Medicine. The systematic review and meta-analysis compiled existing research on asthma in competitive cross-country skiers.
In February 2020, a control survey was sent to 1,754 Finnish residents over 13 years of age to assess respiratory symptom prevalence in the general population.
The research project is progressing. 1,283 cross-country skiers and 978 figure skaters have been invited to participate in the survey.
