Doctoral dissertation on asthma and respiratory symptoms in Finnish competitive cross-country skiers. The research showed that asthma is more prevalent in competitive skiers than in the general population, has a later onset, is more often non-allergic, and is associated with high training volume. Skiers experience frequent respiratory symptoms during exercise, but prolonged cough is rare. Respiratory infections hamper training especially in those with asthma.

Cross-country skiers often experience respiratory symptoms during and after exercise but have a low prevalence of prolonged cough

Post-exercise cough was common in skiers (60.6% vs. 22.8%, p < 0.001), but prolonged cough was rare (2.0% vs. 4.8%). Skiers frequently experienced respiratory symptoms during and after exercise.

High training volume is associated with increased prevalence of nonallergic asthma in competitive cross-country skiers

Asthma prevalence in the most successful competitive cross-country skiers was 56.1%. Non-allergic asthma was more common in skiers than controls (60.1% vs. 38.7%, p = 0.036). Non-allergic asthma OR 5.05 (95% CI 2.65–9.61), allergic asthma OR 1.92 (1.08–3.42).

Higher prevalence but later age at onset of asthma in cross-country skiers compared with general population

Asthma prevalence in 351 competitive cross-country skiers compared with 338 population controls. Asthma was more prevalent in skiers (25.9% vs. 9.2%, p < 0.001) but had a later onset (median 13.0 vs. 8.0 years). 89% of skiers with asthma had well-controlled disease. 82.4% used inhaled corticosteroids regularly.

Asthma in Competitive Cross-Country Skiers: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Systematic review and meta-analysis of asthma in competitive cross-country skiers. From 2,161 search results, 30 articles were included in qualitative synthesis and 8 in meta-analysis. Self-reported doctor-diagnosed asthma prevalence was 21% (95% CI 14–28%). Average medication use was 23% (95% CI 19–26%).
